Sayulita Boat Trip and Snorkeling:

Located just off shore of Punta de Mita lies a chain of three islands called Las Tres Marietas about 10 miles south of Sayulita.

The islands are home for amazing collection of tropical fish, birds, coral and interesting underwater rock formations. Our guided trip to the islands will allow you to sample several snorkeling spots known for their visility and abundance of marine life.

The largest islands of the chain sitd the farthest east. Its eastern side contains the best snorkeling spots. At one location we swim through a cave which leads to a beautiful, perfectly secluded white sand beach.

From here it is a short and slippery hike back to a tide pool. It is simply fascinating to see and hear the water pour in to this rocky holding pen.

This island is best for viewing the blue footed boobies. Found along the western coast of Mexico, mainly around the islands in the Gulf of California and here in Nayarit, the blue footed boobies are gull-like seabirds that have pointed bills and wedge- shaped tails. Their white bellies and dark brown backs can be spotted diving head first in to the ocean for fish and squid. The boobies grow to be 32´´ to 34´´ tall.

The next island of mention is comically referred to as skull island, because of the cranial shape to its rock. Along its north coast is a wonderful beach with an excellent snorkeling spot just off shore. The water here is very shallow and there are several underwater rock formations that are riddled with fish. Here you can expect to see mass quantities yellow fin surgeons, cortez rainbow wrass,, giant hawfish, guineafowl puffers, panamic sergeant majors and king angel fish just to name a few. Ask your knowledgeable guide for description of these and other fish that call the Marietas home. The small cove located just to the left of the beach has many caves to swim into and on the beach itself you can actually view cactus growing!!!

For lunch we will eat on the beautiful white sand beach.

Sayulita area Surfing Trips:

The coast line in this area picks up swells from the northwest to the northwest. With many years of local knowledge we have pretty good idea where to find the best surf conditions. If you find that you would like to do some exploration on your own we can steer you to rental car agency nearby.

San Pancho Surfing: Our local surfer break offers a great left wave breaking on a mixture of rock reef and sand. It picks up southwest to northwest swells capable of holding their shape on very large swells and is located just 15 minutes down the beach from the resort, making it accessible for those early morning dawn patrols.

Sayulita Surfing: Picking up west to northwest swells, this left and right hand wave is located 15 minutes south by car. In 3- 5 foot waves, it has a soft shoulder and is great for mellow long boarding. Above 5 feet, this wave begins to get hollow and fast, accommodating to shorter boards as well. Rocky botton, nice sandy beach. Crowded on weekends.

The docile waves rolling in to this bay are perfect for begginers and longboarders.

Punta Mita Surf: Forming the northerm rim of Puerto Vallarta´s Bahia de Banderas, this strech of coastline offers 8 miles of reef breaks with both left and right hand breaking waves. Punta de Mita picks up southwest swells, breaks 3- 15 feet and includes some of the areas fastes barrels. These breaks are accessed by open pangass. A local guide will take you to all the best breaks. Trip includes boat, captain/ guide & transportation.

Strong right coral break. The best waves in the area, only access by boat ( sea urchins).

Burros Break´s: Right point break, good for lonboard. Needs to be big waves for short board, nice sand beach, big stones and rocks at the bottom.

Lanchas Break´s: Left and right break, good for both long and short board. Sand beach with rocks and sand at the bottom. Only access by boat.

Anclote Break´s: Left and right coral break slow waves, good place for beginners. Longboard recommended.

All 4 places above is in the area of Punta de Mita. In the weekend they are crowded with people. The waves needs to be at least 3- 4 feet to break.

Platanitos: Point break, river mouth & beach break, all sand bottom. Hollow when big but a lot of paddling multiples peaks with left and right breaks. Holds many people. Relieble at low tide for breaking waves when there is no swell. Good for all levels of ability.

Santa Cruz: Left point break, jagged rocks, booties strongly reccomended. Fast and long at shoulder high or more. Good short board wave.

Aticama: Clean left point break, rock and sea urchin bottom. Short and long boards. Shark sightings likely. No crowd.

San Blas: Beach break with multiple peaks.Left and right breaks, sand bottom. Reliable on small swell days.Holds a big crowd. Some ridable waves with close outs. Good for all levels of ability.

San Blas Jungle Trips

Departing from San Pancho early in the morning, our journey to San Blas begins with a 1 ½ hour drive north through the beautiful countryside of Nayarit. Mexico 200 stretches north and connects the bustling tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta in the south with Tepic, Nayarit´s state capital, in the north. Along the way we will pass through the small villages of La Peñita, Las Varas and Zacualpan. Turning westward the route climbs through the mountains providing spectacular view of the ocean and surrounding hills.

As we make our descent from the mountains into San Blas the beach towns of Santa Cruz, Aticama, Los Cocos and Matanchen will come into view. This area war discovered by traveling surfers and is well known for its quality swells, specially Matanchen, which lays claim to the world´s longest rideable wave.

Our first stop is the La Aguada boat launch. This will serve as the atanging area for our voyage up La Tobara.

La Tobara is a pristine freshwater spring unaltered by man.

Aboard a panga boat, we will cruise through the maze of natural canals that promise one of the most ecologycally important mangrove zones in Mexico. Along La Tobara you will encounter a myriadof tropical creatures. Get up close and personal with crocodiles and wild boars, all behind the safety of cahin- link fence, at the cocodrilario. If you look up into the trees surrounding the nursery you might spot an iguana or two. Keep your eyes pealed, they are camouflaged well. Glancing into the dense mangroves, one might catch a glimpse of a green turtle or catfish frolicking in the natural fresh water. The estuaries around San Blas are nationally renown as birdwatchers paradise and La Tobara is no exception.

Bring along a pair of binoculars to view frigatebirds, cormorants, egrets and herons in flight. During your trip notice the thatched- roof huts biult on stilts.

They were placed here during the filming of the popular Mexican Movie Cabeza de Vaca. It recounts the history of indigenous people of this area.

Upon hitting dry land, we are off to explore the historical town of San Blas.

San Blas holds many links to Mexico´s glorious past. Founded in the 18th century by Nuño Beltran Guzman this port city held great military and strategic importance. Evidence of this can be found at the ruins a top Cerro de San Basilio. The accounting and customs office, La Contaduria offers the visitors a spectacular panorama of the town, ocean and estuaries. The church, Marinera, stands in silent testament to Spanish colonial rule.

Once in town our first stop is at the Huichol Art and Visitors Center. One of Nayarit´s indigenous tribes is the Huichols. They live in the high villages of the Sierra Madre Mountains and journey several times a year into town to sell their highly detailed artwork. To produce such artistic splendor, the Huichols consume peyote. Peyote is a small fruit that grows on the cactus. It contains the drug mascaline that causes a hallucinogenic effect giving the artisans the vision, which they handcraft into vibrant, technicolor works of art. Once inside the center, a bilingual guide answer any question you may have about the Huichols and their art. Before departing take some time to look around the city of San Blas. The main square is located just one block away from the visitors center. Surrounding it are a beautiful white church, a bakery and several small cafes and eateries. A Banamex is located on Av. Juarez if you need to exchange dollars for pesos.

Suggested items to bring include: Bug repellent, sun block, hat, camera, binoculars, water bottle, swim suit, towel and pesos for shopping in town.
